Although each Individual in Harvest Moon/Rune Factory has specific Likes and Dislikes where Gifts are concerned, it can be convenient to give more than one Character the same Item, especially when storage or rucksack space is limited. Furthermore, although each Character has a 'Most Favourite Gift' worth +800 AP/FP, the simple act of 'meeting and greeting' any Character is worth +100 FP. A Gift he/she Loves is worth +150 AP/FP in Grand Bazaar, rather than the usual +300 AP/FP in other Harvest Moon games. An 'acceptable' Gift is worth +50 AP/FP. It therefore is better always to go to the trouble of meeting and greeting a Character daily even if you have no Gifts that will excite him/her. A Gift that is acceptable is better than none.
A Most Favourite Gift in Grand Bazaar, as in any Harvest Moon/Rune Factory game tends to elicit a Response that is unique and one that mentions the item by name. For example, when you give Ivan Herb Perfume, he will respond:
Ivan for Herb Perfume: This is herb perfume. What? I can have it? Thank you very much. I really love how this perfume smells.
Lloyd similarly responds to his Favourite, Paella with:
Lloyd for Paella (laughing) Paella!! For me? I really love this. Thanks!
When you give an individual an Item he/she Loves, worth 150 AP/FP, he/she usually will accompany the response with a laugh or chuckle or, in Lloyd's case, an embarrassed cough. Ivan's Response for a Gift he Loves is:
Ivan for Toy Flower, any other Flower or Herb, Fried Rice Ball or Egg Rice: What? Is this for me? (with a laugh) Thank you very much.
For a Gift that is acceptable, the Character will thank you politely but will not display any outward sign of delight. Ivan's Response for a Gift that is merely acceptable:
Ivan for Chocolate Cookies: Is this for me? Thank you very much.
As you can see, the text of the two Responses Ivan makes are almost identical. What distinguishes one from the other is the delighted laugh he gives when he accepts a Gift he Loves.
Characters WILL accept Gifts that they dislike, detest or view with utter Horror. These Items have a negative AP/FP value. If any Character refuses to accept a Gift, it is because you have neglected him/her for a couple of days. This is another reason why you should meet and greet every one on a daily basis. Fortunately, the effects of Neglect dissipate fairly quickly compared to a game like Sunshine Islands where a Character could reject a Gift for six Days if you ignored him/her for a week or more.
A second Gift on any given day, however, will not be accepted, but the Character will make it clear that he/she received a Gift from you previously.
An 'Easiest Gifts' List often is very helpful in Harvest Moon/Rune Factory. The Items listed usually are not 'Most Favourite Gifts' for any of the Characters but they are Gifts that the Individual Loves and they have the advantages of being inexpensive or easy to obtain as well as being suitable for more than one Character.
Flowers are at the top of the List. In Grand Bazaar, Flowers will be accepted happily by EVERY Individual during the Flower Festival but their Responses to a Flower will differ from their ordinary Responses to a Gift of the same Flower. You therefore cannot judge a Character's true feelings about Flowers as Gifts by his/her Responses during the Flower Festival.
Another easy Gift is Insects. In the majority of cases, however, Characters will respond positively to specific types of Insects rather than Insects in general. The exceptions to this are Lloyd and Kevin who love ANY Insect. Generally, Items found when foraging are the easiest and least valuable Gifts. You cannot give them to every Character but you will find that you can give them to MOST Characters. The Cooked Dishes are Recipes that require no special Cookware.

The Danger of Jumping to Conclusions in Harvest Moon games
As a veteran Harvest Moon/Rune Factory player, when I first begin to play any new game in the series, I often have some advantages over players who never played Harvest Moon or Rune Factory games before. On the other hand, it is easy for me to jump to conclusions and that can be dangerous.
There are two ways to approach the task of writing strategy guides for players. The best method obviously would be to write the guide and perfect it before publication. If one has advance access to the games, one can do this to some extent, although test versions tend to be a little different from the ultimate retail version. Furthermore, where Harvest Moon or Rune Factory games are concerned, there are so many details that one needs months to work on any guides, irrespective of being able to PLAY the game for months.
The second way to write guides, especially on the internet, is to publish as quickly as possible in order to give players some point of reference and then update constantly until the guides are completed. Players have urged me to follow this course again and again.
Unfortunately, in the interest of making some information available to players as quickly as possible, my preliminary Guides for most games require constant updates for a few months after they first are published on the internet. This method of writing guides can be a little humiliating for the writer sometimes when she discovers that she has made some errors. I do apologise for any errors that appear in them, but I do try to correct these as quickly as possible.
I made some fundamental errors where Grand Bazaar was concerned based on past Harvest Moon games in terms of upgrades. This was an example of 'jumping to conclusions'. In the case of the Fishing Rod upgrades, I should have read the description at the Windmill more carefully. I paid the price personally for my carelessness when, after upgrading my Short Fishing Rod five times to the maximum 5 Star Quality and obtaining all ingredients for the Medium Fishing Rod upgrade, I was unable to transform the Short Fishing Rod into a basic Medium Fishing Rod. Serves me right! The error has been corrected in my Guides. It is not a bad idea to upgrade the Short Fishing Rod to Five Stars as it does improve fishing results but it will not become a different Tool.
Another similar error I made was in my initial descriptions of the ingredients required to make a few items at the 1st Windmill. What appeared to be the icons of Medium and Larg Milk in fact are icons for Jersey Milk and Golden Milk.
I would urge players always to refer to the latest versions of my Grand Bazaar Guides at this point in time. They remain 'works in progress' and I try to update them constantly with new information as well as corrected information whenever necessary.

Multiplayer Tips and Tricks for Grand Bazaar
Some players have had trouble in finding Seeds and other Items at the Weekly Bazaar. My own Grand Bazaar Walkthrough/General Guide lists the items that have appeared in my own files in various Seasons, before and after expansions, but there are players who have not found all these items on offer in their games.
Essentially, the principles by which new items in all Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games usually are one of the following:
1. The total of Items one has shipped. For example, some actions that unlocked new options in other games included: 100 of each of 4 types of Spring Crops, 100 Cheese created in a Maker and so on
2. The total one has spent at a specific shop. For example, in Sunshine Islands, new pets were unlocked by the total one spent at the Animal Supplies Shop.
3. The purchase of a specific item. For example, in HM DS/Cute DS, one had to buy the Round Table from the Shopping Channel in order to unlock the ability to expand the Farmhouse.
4. The appearance of new Characters. For example, in Sunshine Islands, it was the appearance of a specific number of members of the Ranch Team that would unlock Sheep.
5. A specific percentage of 'completion' in one or more aspects of the game. Bazaar expansions in Grand Bazaar depend upon this.
6. A specific Friendship/Affection Level with another Character in the game.
In other words, if specific items fail to appear at your Weekly Bazaar, it is possible that specific purchases on your part may unlock the items you need. In all my files, the Brush appeared at Felix's Stall the week after I purchased my first Livestock animal. Once I purchased the Brush, the Bell appeared. When I purchased the Bell, the Stethoscope appeared. When I purchased the Stethoscope, the Cat Bell and Dog Bone appeared. It was at the end of the first Summer, I believe that the Cat Bell and Dog Bone first appeared.
My Character always purchases all possible upgrades as quickly as possible. She therefore had purchased all three Cookware Utensils, had upgraded her Storage and purchased 2 Chickens and 2 Cows before the end of the first Summer. She had purchased all items sold by Raul and all Seeds and other items sold by Chen and Sherry. She had ordered a Storage upgrade from Gannon. She had steadily increased Friendship Levels with all Characters in Zephyr Village. She had purchased Cooked Dishes from Joan and added a fair number of Recipes to her Cookbook. She had used all three Windmills. Whether or not any of these purchases or actions affected the appearance of any new items at any Stall, I do not know.
Other players have not found the Cat Bell or Dog Bone at Felix's Stall even after purchasing all Ranch Tools including the Stethoscope. My first instinct was to ask whether or not they had achieved the first Bazaar expansion. It is possible that you will not be able to purchase these items until the Bazaar has been expanded once. If, however, any Player has not expanded the Bazaar, but has been able to purchase Cat Bell or Dog Bone, I will know that this is not the requirement... I will be interested to hear from players about this.
The point I have been trying to make here is that you usually can unlock all new options without knowing precisely how you are doing it simply by diligent action in all areas of life.
In fact, unlocking Cats and Dogs at Enrique's Amazing Animals Stall is based on the number of Chickens or Livestock you have purchased previously. If you purchase four Chickens, you will unlock Cats. If you purchase four Livestock Animals, he will begin to sell Dogs.
If, however, you are unable to unlock any item that you want or need as quickly as you would wish, the Multiplayer option offers a method of obtaining those items.
Crop Seeds and Tree Seeds that have not appeared in your own game can be purchased at a Neighbourhood Bazaar at another Player's Stall in Multiplayer Mode. The Cat Bell actually can be sold there as well. Cooked Dishes that are purchased in Multiplayer Mode are sold WITH their Recipes. This is a way to add more Recipes to your Cookbook. Fish and Insects can be sold at Neighbourhood Bazaars but when you purchase them, they will not be added to your own collection list. You actually have to catch them yourself in order to add them to the Lists in your Farm Assets Menu.
Most Fish that are purchased at another Player's Stall in Multiplayer Mode can be used as ingredients in Recipes. There are Fish that cannot be used in the Kitchen, even when your Character caught them in your own village. Among these are the Ayumodoki, the Bluegill and the Moray Eel.
Many different Fish can be used to create such Dishes as Fish Stew, Fish Paste and Grilled Fish. Although the Recipe will specify a particular variety, you can use others successfully by trial and error.
For example, the Recipe for Sashimi specifies Tuna but Sculpin can be used as well.
Similarly, although the Recipe for Fish Stew specifies Silver Goby, Dark Sleeper, Gin-Buna and Mackerel all can be used to create the Dish. If you need a specific type of Fish to create a Dish but the Fish cannot be caught in the current season, you either can visit another village in that Season or buy the Fish from another player.
There is an aspect of Cooking that has confused players which is that of 'Cooking with Recipe'. Recipes in Grand Bazaar are item-specific. In other words, if you use a Silver Goby to create Fish Stew, and the game records that as the Recipe, only Silver Goby will be recognised as the ingredient to make Fish Stew when you use the option to 'Cook with Recipe'. In other words, if you KNOW that your Mackerel can be used to make Fish Stew, but Silver Goby is given as the Ingredient in the Recipe, the game will tell you that you do not have the necessary ingredients to make Fish Stew. To use different ingredients, you have to 'Cook Without Recipe'. (The actual wording of the prompt may be different. I am writing from memory at the moment.) In other words, to use a different Fish such as a Mackerel, choose the option to 'Cook without Recipe', then place the Fish manually in the Ingredient Slot.
After the Dish is made, the game will ask if you wish to change the Recipe. If you do so, it will give Mackerel now as the Ingredient instead of Silver Coby.
In other Harvest Moon games, Fish usually are distinguished only by size. Recipes require Medium Fish for the most part, irrespective of variety. Grand Bazaar distinguishes Fish by species rather than size.
In terms of Multiplayer sessions, there are a few tips that can be very useful. Visits to another Player's village should be made on a day when all of his/her Crops are ripe. In such a case, EVERY player, including the Host will be able to harvest every Crop in the field.
If it is Friday in your game and you need to rid yourself of items, a Multiplayer game is a good way to achieve this without loss of profit as you can sell items at another player's Stall. Remember not to buy all the items on display, however, until you have completed your own sales. Once the Stall is 'sold out', no more transactions can occur. If, therefore, you intend to fish and/or dive for items, it is best to leave one item on another player's Stall until you have completed all your own activities so that you can sell excess items before the Multiplayer game comes to an end.
Incidentally, another Tip where Fishing is concerned is to do as much as possible when the weather is nastiest. Fishing in a Hurricane or Snowstorm can bring great rewards, even with a Short Fishing Rod. The Hotel Screen appears to be best for most ocean Fish. Evidently, the storm affects the tides and brings them into the river during the worst storms.

A Peek at a Princeling
Amir in Grand Bazaar, like Will in Sunshine Islands, is a Character who is not introduced into the game immediately. Like Will, he has a very long name and a privileged background. The similarities end there, however. Where Will had an easy, open manner with strangers, Amir is a little reserved at the start.
As a 'prince from a faraway land', Amir has two names that actually translate to royal titles. 'Amir' is Prince in Arabic. 'Raj' is King in more than one language in India. He has the long silver hair that is so attractive in Harvest Moon bachelors but the resemblance to Skye or Vaughn ends there as his skin has a dusky hue.
You should be introduced to Amir for the first time by Felix on 3 Winter. He will stay in a guest room on the upper floor of the Hotel. Although he will accept flowers politely, he really loves Milk. By Winter in the first year, you ought to have at least one Cow who gives Milk daily.
If you court Amir, you will have no Rival for his affections. The same is true with respect to Emiko. Amir is added to the list of Eligible Bachelors if your Character is a Girl and Emiko will be added in the second year to the list of Eligible Girls if your Character is a Boy.
Although Heart Events occur only if Amir/Emiko is Eligible for Marriage in your Game, there are some Friendship Events that can be experienced even when the Character is not Eligible for Marriage. These will be found in my Characters Guide when I have time to include all of them.

Cooking Festivals in Grand Bazaar in the first Year

Cooking Festival
You will experience two Cooking Festivals in the middle of the first Autumn. By this time, your Character should have all Cookware and a decent array of Ingredients and Recipes. The Festival occurs in two consecutive days. The Theme on the first day is Entrees and the Theme on the second is Desserts.
One of the purposes of any Cooking Festival in Harvest Moon is to introduce new Dishes to players. In the first year, you are likely to see Dishes on the Table that you have not encountered at Joan's Cafe or Stall.
As with most Festivals in Grand Bazaar, the Cooking Festivals are held at noon in the Town Square. Felix presides but then announces a visiting expert judge in the person of Pierre from Sunny Island/Sunshine Islands!
It is not difficult to win 1st Prize in the Cooking Festival in Grand Bazaar. A player can cheat a little by purchasing a Cooked Dish in Multiplayer Mode but you will not win if you enter a Dish purchased from the Cafe as they are of poor quality at 1/2 Stars.
For the Entree, a simple Fish Stew of 3 1/2 Stars Quality made with a Silver Goby in a Pot won 1st Prize. The prize is a Truffle, given by Pierre.
The theme for the second Day in the Cooking Festival is Desserts in the first year. Freshness possibly is as critical in determining the quality of your Dish as the Rank or Stars that it has. With a 4 Star Pudding that was only 'fairly fresh', Freyja did not win 1st Prize, but with a 4 Star Pumpkin Pudding that was 'Super Fresh', she did. The prize if you win in both Categories is a Pink Diamond.
Incidentally, in another file, Freyja submitted a 4 Star Pudding that was 'Super Fresh' and won 1st Prize, so it was the lack of freshness rather than the choice of Dish that was significant.
In my game, Freyja won 1st Prize on both days, but a player who won only on the second day shared the information that the prize for winning only the Dessert Contest is a Tin of Blueberry Tea.
A Note about Pierre: You will be able to find Pierre at the Bazaar during the Winter Season from 2.30 p.m. or so until 5.00 p.m. Freyja caught him on the path leading from the Hotel to the Bazaar, and they conversed about the Bazaar. Searching for him during her 'break' later, she found him, not unexpectedly hovering about Joan's Stall. His Bazaar dialogues are included in the Characters Guide.
Multiplayer Games
Multiplayer Games
Grand Bazaar has a Multiplayer Option that allows four players to play together. One player must host the game at his/her farm. One to three other Players can join him/her either through DS to DS local connection or the Nintendo World Centre with a Friend Code. You do not need a Friend Code to play DS to DS but you do need to have one if you wish to use the internet option. Any one who has unlocked the Multiplayer Option will be capable of joining a game.
The Multiplayer Option allows up to three players to 'visit' another player's farm. When this visit occurs, it will not occur on the current date in any player's game but may be instead on the first day of the Host Player's current season. All Players will begin at the Hotel, where Stuart will greet them and tell them the rules.
Before you embark on any Multiplayer venture, you should choose three Bazaar items to sell at the Neighbourhood Bazaar (the Multiplayer Bazaar). As with the weekly bazaar, you can choose a stack of items or a single item for each of the three slots. In the Multiplayer option, you can choose to sell the items either for full price or half-price. Half-price is the price that Raul or any merchant normally pays for your items, incidentally.
With respect to this, it is only items that are in your Bag that are eligible. You cannot go to your Storage once you choose Multiplayer Mode. This can present a problem if you did not plan ahead for the Multiplayer game and the items you intended to sell remain in your Storage Room. You therefore need to place the items you wish to sell in your Bag on the previous night before you go to bed and save the game.
There are three basic steps to follow in order to play in Multiplayer Mode. First choose the method by which the game will be played, whether it is 'local' (DS to DS) or internet (Nintendo World Centre). Then select three items from your Bag to sell at the Bazaar. You must select the items before you begin the Multiplayer Game but if you do not wish to sell any items for any reason, you can decline this option.
The location of the game is the next choice, whether you wish to Host the game on your own farm or visit another farm. Season is the most important consideration here. Any Multiplayer game begins, by default, on the 1st day of the Host's current season. If the Host is willing to share Crops to the other players, he/she should make certain that they are ready to harvest or will be ready in a day or so. Other seasonal considerations are the types of Fish that can be caught in the Host's town.
When one player has chosen the option to Host the game, he/she must save. Other players then will be able to join the game. When all players have joined, the Host will be able to begin the Multiplayer Game.
The game will begin at the Hotel with a rather long-winded explanation by Stuart. Due to an unspecified 'incident', it is forbidden to hold items over a player's head during Multiplayer games. What this means, in fact, is that items cannot be tossed on the ground or given as Gifts. They CAN be sold at the Neighbourhood Stalls of other players as long as the Stalls have items on display.
In any Multiplayer game, you can explore the host's village, speaking to other Characters as well as harvesting any Crops that are ripe on the host's field. You will not be able to find any Insects or items for foraging but you can dive in the river for items. If you have a Fishing Rod, you can fish.
Remember to keep empty slots in your Bag if possible in order to be able to store the Fish you catch and the items you find in the River.
When you wish to sell or buy items, you need to go to the Bazaar Grounds where you will find that agents have set up stalls for all the Players. You can Buy the items at any Stall or sell items from your Bag but only while another Player still has items to sell at his/her Neighbourhood Stall. Once all items are purchased, the only message you will receive is the fact that the items are sold out.
You can speak to Zephyr Town Characters in Multiplayer Mode and some of them will give you the 'Records' of all participating players in collecting Insects, bouncing off Animals and other activities. You cannot use the Windmills in Multiplayer Mode, nor can you purchase any items at the Cafe, although Marian will urge you to bring your Friends to the Cafe for a cup of coffee. You may learn interesting information from players as well. The Twins will tell you that although Cindy likes Yam dessert, it is Lauren's Most Favourite Dish.
Characters have different dialogues on different days. By staying in Multiplayer Mode more than one day, you may discover more interesting facts. For example, Freya may tell you on the third day that:
Freya: Ivan loves herb perfume. I like it too, so I told him about a perfume and cologne shop in the city.
Another interesting fact can be gleaned from Ivan with respect to the Huchen, a rare fish.
Ivan: You can find a rare fish here when it gets cool. What was it called...? Bochen? Muchen? It was something like that, but I can't quite remember.
If you do not dismiss Nellie as some one who simply 'talks about nothing' as her daughter Cindy declares, you may learn something useful.
Nellie: You can use Wonderfuls to enhance the Windmills. A purple Wonderful lets you make special items. You should give it a try sometime.
When you are finished with the multiplayer game, return to the Hotel and tell Stuart that you are ready to sleep for the night in your room. All players must go to bed before the game can be saved and terminated.
You can play through more than one day in Multiplayer Mode. It is the Host's prerogative to end the game at the end of the day or continue it. If you wish to play through more than one day, it is a good idea to keep the Neighbourhood Stalls open by leaving one item for sale at each one. That way, you can sell unwanted items in order to maintain empty slots in your Bag. You can make quite a decent profit if you spend a few days fishing in Multiplayer Mode as long as you can continue to sell the fish you catch.
Be warned, however, that Items in your Bag will deteriorate over the course of time even in Multiplayer Mode. If the item is merely 'fairly fresh' when you begin the game and you stay more than a day or two, it may begin to go off. It is better, therefore to sell items that are 'fairly fresh' at the Neighbour Stall immediately or you will find that their value has decreased by the time you are forced to sell the item before it rots completely.
Note about Host Farm: Although any Multiplayer game begins on the first day of the Host Player's current Season, time does run as far as Crops are concerned. You therefore do need to water any Crops that have not matured or they will appear dry the next day. When Multiplayer Mode continues through more than one day, you need to water all Crops every day. Any player can do this. Weather is variable and on rainy days, Crops need no care.
When any Crop dries out from a day's neglect, it can be recovered if you water it the following day, but this neglect will delay your harvest by at least a day and possibly downgrade the quality of the Crop as well. It appears that Multiple Harvest Crops can be harvested only once in any Multiplayer game. When any Crop is harvested on the Host's Farm, it becomes black for the remainder of the game. This does not signify death, by the way, but simply that it cannot be harvested again. You should continue to water Crops that have turned black!
One of the great virtues of Multiplayer Mode is the ability to obtain items that are not in season in your own game. There are a few Recipes that require items from more than one season. For example, Herb Salad requires all three Herbs. Perfumes use Flowers or Fruits from more than one season.
If one of the players has all three Windmills and the others do not have them yet, Multiplayer Mode will allow you to 'sell' raw ingredients to the Player with the Windmills, so that he/she can process them. Start another Multiplayer game after the first has been terminated to 'sell' the items in processed form back to the Player who provided them.
Note that, if any Player buys a Cooked Dish for which he/she does not have the Recipe yet from a Neighbourhood Stall, the vendor will teach him/her the Recipe. This is a method by which new Recipes can be added to your Cookbook if you do not have the ingredients to make them yet.

Grand Bazaar Heart Events Calendar
This Calendar includes all Heart Events and Rival Heart Events for all Bachelors and Eligible Girls with the exception of Emiko. Emiko's Heart Events can occur on any Day of the Week in any Season, with the exception of her 4th Heart Event which will not occur in Winter when the Waterfall is frozen. Another reason I have not included Emiko's Events in this Day-by-Day Calendar is because each Event has a Gift total Requirement. You will find the schedule of her Heart Events with their Requirements in the section of this Guide that is devoted to Emiko.
There are two separate Day-by-Day Calendars here. The first lists all Heart and Rival Heart Events that have no Requirements in terms of Year. The second consists solely of Rival Heart Events for the second year and later. ANY Event that is listed in the Day-by-Day Calendar for the first year can be triggered in any subsequent year provided any and all Requirements have been met.
The difference between Heart Events and Rival Heart Events in terms of Heart Level Requirements often confuses players but if you view it logically, you will see that the Event requirements are based on the degree of Affection that the Eligible Girl or Bachelor has for your Character. Rival Heart Events will not trigger if the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl or Bachelor is TOO HIGH. As any Rival Heart Event deals with the relationship between the Eligible Girl/Bachelor and your Rival, it makes sense that he/she would not be interested in your Rival if his/her Affections are focused on your Character. Each successive Rival Heart Event brings your Rival closer to the Eligible Girl or Bachelor.
In Grand Bazaar, Rival Heart Events lead nowhere ultimately as there are no Rival Marriages so there is no reason to avoid them. At the same time, as they will not lead to any Rival Marriage, there is no compelling reason to experience them apart from being able to experience as many Events as possible.
Rival Heart Events always are 'year-specific'. It is only the first Rival Heart Event that can be experienced in the first year. To experience the 2nd Rival Heart Event, you must wait until the second year and make certain that you have not raised the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor too high.
The third Rival Heart Event cannot be experienced before the third year and the fourth and final Rival Heart Event will not trigger before the fourth Year.
If you wish to experience all Rival Heart Events, there are two main strategies for doing so. The first would be to raise the Heart Levels of any Character for whom a Rival exists VERY SLOWLY. This strategy is not practical for any one who likes to interact with all Characters often, remembering Birthdays and celebrating all Festivals.
The second strategy is the one that I employ and recommend. Go ahead and raise the Heart Levels of every Character as quickly as possible in order to be able to experience all Heart Events and other Events with Friendship requirements. Do not worry about the Rival Heart Events until you reach the fourth year.
Once you reach the fourth year, you can LOWER the Heart Levels of every Eligible Girl/Bachelor with a Rival and then effortlessly experience all four Rival Heart Events for each couple. By the fourth year, you should be able to obtain the 'Most Favourite Gift' for every Character without any trouble. As a Most Favourite Gift is worth +800 AP, you can raise Heart Levels again very quickly after experiencing all Rival Heart Events.
If you wish to marry before the 4th Year (and many players do), you either should choose Amir or Emiko (as they have no Rivals) or resign yourself to missing the Rival Heart Events for the Character you intend to marry.
In terms of Heart Events, there is no upper limit to Heart Levels. You can experience all four Heart Events for any Eligible Girl or Bachelor even if the individual is at deepest red Heart Level, if you did not experience them previously. Where Heart Events are concerned, the Heart Level requirements all stipulate a minimum Heart Level. This is very logical as each successive Heart Event presupposes a deeper level of affection between the Eligible Girl/Bachelor and your Character.
In the following Day-by-Day Calendar, unless Weather requirements are stated, you should assume that the Event can occur on any Sunny or Cloudy Day. NO Events will occur on the Days of Festivals or the Weekly Bazaar.

There are two separate Day-by-Day Calendars here. The first lists all Heart and Rival Heart Events that have no Requirements in terms of Year. The second consists solely of Rival Heart Events for the second year and later. ANY Event that is listed in the Day-by-Day Calendar for the first year can be triggered in any subsequent year provided any and all Requirements have been met.
The difference between Heart Events and Rival Heart Events in terms of Heart Level Requirements often confuses players but if you view it logically, you will see that the Event requirements are based on the degree of Affection that the Eligible Girl or Bachelor has for your Character. Rival Heart Events will not trigger if the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl or Bachelor is TOO HIGH. As any Rival Heart Event deals with the relationship between the Eligible Girl/Bachelor and your Rival, it makes sense that he/she would not be interested in your Rival if his/her Affections are focused on your Character. Each successive Rival Heart Event brings your Rival closer to the Eligible Girl or Bachelor.
In Grand Bazaar, Rival Heart Events lead nowhere ultimately as there are no Rival Marriages so there is no reason to avoid them. At the same time, as they will not lead to any Rival Marriage, there is no compelling reason to experience them apart from being able to experience as many Events as possible.
Rival Heart Events always are 'year-specific'. It is only the first Rival Heart Event that can be experienced in the first year. To experience the 2nd Rival Heart Event, you must wait until the second year and make certain that you have not raised the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor too high.
The third Rival Heart Event cannot be experienced before the third year and the fourth and final Rival Heart Event will not trigger before the fourth Year.
If you wish to experience all Rival Heart Events, there are two main strategies for doing so. The first would be to raise the Heart Levels of any Character for whom a Rival exists VERY SLOWLY. This strategy is not practical for any one who likes to interact with all Characters often, remembering Birthdays and celebrating all Festivals.
The second strategy is the one that I employ and recommend. Go ahead and raise the Heart Levels of every Character as quickly as possible in order to be able to experience all Heart Events and other Events with Friendship requirements. Do not worry about the Rival Heart Events until you reach the fourth year.
Once you reach the fourth year, you can LOWER the Heart Levels of every Eligible Girl/Bachelor with a Rival and then effortlessly experience all four Rival Heart Events for each couple. By the fourth year, you should be able to obtain the 'Most Favourite Gift' for every Character without any trouble. As a Most Favourite Gift is worth +800 AP, you can raise Heart Levels again very quickly after experiencing all Rival Heart Events.
If you wish to marry before the 4th Year (and many players do), you either should choose Amir or Emiko (as they have no Rivals) or resign yourself to missing the Rival Heart Events for the Character you intend to marry.
In terms of Heart Events, there is no upper limit to Heart Levels. You can experience all four Heart Events for any Eligible Girl or Bachelor even if the individual is at deepest red Heart Level, if you did not experience them previously. Where Heart Events are concerned, the Heart Level requirements all stipulate a minimum Heart Level. This is very logical as each successive Heart Event presupposes a deeper level of affection between the Eligible Girl/Bachelor and your Character.
In the following Day-by-Day Calendar, unless Weather requirements are stated, you should assume that the Event can occur on any Sunny or Cloudy Day. NO Events will occur on the Days of Festivals or the Weekly Bazaar.

Insect Locations in Grand Bazaar
The Fine Art of Critter-Catching
Insects are as important as Fish in Grand Bazaar in terms of completing your Character's Collections in his/her Farm Assets Menu. There is a separate Tab for Insects where you will find every type of Insect that you have caught listed.
Your Character will have a 'Critter-Catching' Title as well and when he/she catches a specific number of new types of insects, his/her Skill level will increase and a new Title will be awarded. It is not the sum total of ALL insects caught that raises Skill but the total of new types of Insects.
Catching Insects requires a number of different strategies that depend on the type of insect. Some insects need to be approached slowly by walking. Others can be caught only if your Character leaps into the air. Knowing your Insects' behaviour patterns is the key to success.
To catch any Butterfly, you either can walk towards it and catch it while it is hovering close to the ground or leap upward to catch it in mid-flight. Butterflies are fairly easy to catch.
Easier even than Butterflies, however, are the Locusts and Grasshoppers that hop across the ground on every screen. You simply need to position yourself properly to catch them. Whether you walk or run is irrelevant, although you probably can position yourself more precisely if you are walking.
Fireflies appear in the Summer and these require very slow movements. In fact, if you run towards a Firefly, it will fly away and disappear from the screen. Walk towards the Firefly, then note its precise position and stand in front of that spot. Its light will wink in and out. When its light appears, catch it from your stationary position.
A large variety of Cicadas and Beetles appear in Summer as well on the trunks of Trees as well as the walls of buildings. These require some skill to catch in the sense that it is a two-part process. As with Fireflies, if your Character is running, the Insects will be startled and fly away to disappear entirely from the screen. What you need to do is walk very slowly to a position that is within a square of the Insect's position. In some cases, it is easier to approach it from the side rather than the front. The Tree in front of Angelo's house is an example of a situation where you will have greater success if you approach from the side. The second part of the strategy requires that your Character leap towards the Tree, pressing the B Button to catch the Insect at the same time. With these Insects, you only have one chance to succeed. If you miss, the Insect will fly away.
Dragonflies can be caught either when running or walking, leaping or standing. They are fairly fast, however, and will cross the river repeatedly. In the section that gives the locations of all Insects by Season, Dragonflies are listed on both the north and south back of the River on almost all screens. You cannot be more precise than that. Even on the Farm screen, the Dragonflies and Skimmers will move from north to south and cover considerable ground.
Frogs appear only in bad weather and certain varieties only appear during Hurricanes. They will appear on every screen, but as always, the varieties are location-specific.
Insects are time-specific as well as location-specific. Some Insects are found only during the Evening and Night. Others are found in the Morning or during the entire Day. You need to hunt Insects at all hours of the Day and Night in every type of Weather if you wish to achieve 100% completion and the ultimate Critter-Catching Title.
Incidentally, in some locations, you will see that there are two specific Insects that can be found during any Season. One often is more uncommon than the other. This is particularly true of the Insects that are found on Tree Trunks on any screen.

Freya and Freyashawk
So many players are asking about the Character of Freya in Grand Bazaar and my own name. I have been writing strategy guides under the name of Freyashawk for a number of years and my Character in any Harvest Moon or Rune Factory game always has been Freya (if female) and Freyr or Frey (if male) whenever one is not allowed enough letters to name a Character Freyashawk.
Natsume did promise to name a Character after me. Whether or not the new Character in Grand Bazaar was named with me in mind or not, I cannot say as I didn't produce the game!
Mind you, in my first Grand Bazaar file, I named my Girl Character Freya as usual and then had a confusing situation where the small village of Zephyr Town had TWO girls named Freya!

Bazaar Dialogues
This is an excerpt from a new section added to my General Guide/Walkthrough:
The Weekly Bazaar in Grand Bazaar, apart from being the venue for many Stalls where unique items and services can be purchased, actually consists primarily of two separate Mini-Games at your Character's Stall. The first is the Selling Game. When you offer items in the three slots at your Stall, you must be quick and accurate if a Customer offers to buy them. The number of items a Customer wishes to buy will be displayed and you must press the A Button the correct number of times to fill the order. If you are too slow, the Customer will leave and you will lose the sale.
The second Mini-Game is the Reputation Mini-Game. This consists of Dialogue with a Customer. The Customer can be one of the unnamed generic Customers who attend the Weekly Bazaar or it can be one of your fellow villagers. A request for Dialogue is displayed by an icon of a little head with mouth open. You always will be given a choice of three Responses. The Response that you choose will determine whether your Reputation increases or decreases. In some cases, your Response can result in a significant profit or loss in terms of sales as well.
The following are specific Dialogues with Customers. The correct response and the result in terms of Reputation and profit or loss are included.
Hungry Customer

Little Tips and Tricks for Grand Bazaar
This information is included in my General Guide now but it may be useful to players who are beginning the game for the first time.
Tips and Tricks
Any item that is not 'Super Fresh!' will be less valuable than the same item in its freshest state. When items begin to go off, they can be sold, but they usually are worth no more than 1G each. If, however, you are able to use the Item either in your Kitchen to create a Cooked Dish or in a Windmill Recipe, it will regain its Freshness and its value will be as high as that of the same Dish or Item when made with a 'Super Fresh' ingredient! You therefore should use all Items that have lost their freshness rating in a Cooked Dish or Windmill Recipe.
Storage is a problem in most Harvest Moon games, especially at the start. There are some ways to store items temporarily outside of your Storage Room. Crops that have ripened, for example, can be left in the Ground at least for a day. If a Bazaar is scheduled the next day, it is better to leave all ripened Crops in the ground overnight for two reasons. The first is to increase your Storage space. The second is because Seeds are sold at the Bazaars. Once you harvest any Crop, the land will revert to untilled soil overnight. If you harvest Crops the day before a Bazaar, you will be forced to retill the land for the Seeds purchased at the Bazaar. As soon as one slot is empty, fill it with another item, even if all you have are Weeds. Some one will buy...
Another Bazaar strategy is useful in terms of current Sales Goals. Although meeting your Sales Goal is no guarantee that the Bazaar will expand the next week, it certainly brings Zephyr Town closer to expansion. In Multiplayer Mode, it is better to buy expensive items, depleting your own income, to sell at the next Bazaar than to be in a position where all the Items that you possess, if sold, would not allow you to meet the Sales Goal. Agreeing with other players to sell items at half-price is the best way to make certain that every one can afford to buy the Items on display.
Another tip for Multiplayer Mode is to sell raw ingredients to a Player who has unlocked all the Windmills if you have not done so yourself. Once you quit the game, the buyer can process the items, then sell them back to you in a new Multiplayer game. Good communication is the key to a profitable Multiplayer Neighbourhood Bazaar. You can sell items at the Stalls of other Players at a Neighbourhood Bazaar, but remember always that any item sold is one less item that can be sold at your Weekly Bazaar.
As far as catching insects is concerned, most Insects are caught only if your Character walks instead of running. To catch any Firefly, you should stand in front of the location where its light appeared and, when the light winks into view again, catch the Insect. There are Insects that can be caught only if your Character leaps into the air. A double leap or somersault, followed by a press of the B Button can allow you to catch flying insects that could not be reached from the ground. This is a strategy for catching the Insects that you spy on Tree Trunks. Walk slowly to position yourself in front of the Tree Trunk. When the Insect begins to fly, leap into the air to catch it.
Tips and Tricks
Any item that is not 'Super Fresh!' will be less valuable than the same item in its freshest state. When items begin to go off, they can be sold, but they usually are worth no more than 1G each. If, however, you are able to use the Item either in your Kitchen to create a Cooked Dish or in a Windmill Recipe, it will regain its Freshness and its value will be as high as that of the same Dish or Item when made with a 'Super Fresh' ingredient! You therefore should use all Items that have lost their freshness rating in a Cooked Dish or Windmill Recipe.
Storage is a problem in most Harvest Moon games, especially at the start. There are some ways to store items temporarily outside of your Storage Room. Crops that have ripened, for example, can be left in the Ground at least for a day. If a Bazaar is scheduled the next day, it is better to leave all ripened Crops in the ground overnight for two reasons. The first is to increase your Storage space. The second is because Seeds are sold at the Bazaars. Once you harvest any Crop, the land will revert to untilled soil overnight. If you harvest Crops the day before a Bazaar, you will be forced to retill the land for the Seeds purchased at the Bazaar. If, however, you harvest the Crops on the morning of the Bazaar, you can come home in the evening to plant your new Seeds without having to till the soil.

The Mechanics of Heart Events and Rival Heart Events in Grand Bazaar
You will find most of the early Heart Events and Rival Heart Events for the Eligible Girls and Bachelors in my Courtship and Marriage Guide now. As always, I am able to update my posts of these guides on weekends, while the version of IGN remains unchanged until Monday. You therefore will find newer expanded versions of my Guides usually on this site.
It is interesting to note that other Events such as the Events that unlock the three Windmills will occur on different days in different files, so it is possible that they are loaded into the game randomly within a specific 'window of opportunity'. In five different files now, I have experienced the Windmill Events on a number of different days, within a seven day period! I never have triggered one on a rainy day, however, so good weather may be a requirement. Another Requirement is that the Events will not occur on a Festival Day or a Bazaar Day.
In Hero of Leaf Valley, there was a specific hierarchy for Events. Events that were mandatory for the best successful 'ending' had first priority. It is possible that Grand Bazaar has a little hierarchy in certain situations as well. For example, if you purchase an Animal or an Expansion at the Bazaar, the Delivery of that Animal or Announcement of completion of the Expansion ALWAYS occurs on the next morning at 6.00 a.m.
The Visits by Felix in the first year to deliver Tea for the Tea Party and Wine for the Wine Festival respectively did not occur on the same day in different files. Obviously, the Event must occur before the Festival date, but within that requirement, there apparently is room for variation.
Events and Weather for the next day evidently are loaded into the game when you save it before going to bed on the previous night. The save File actually will include sound effects for the Weather that is current when you awaken.
Originally, I thought that Heart Events might be random to some extent once any requirements had been met. I now realise that they simply obey specific rules as in any Harvest Moon game. They will not occur on any Festival or Bazaar Day and most require fine weather. If an Eligible Girl/Bachelor's Heart Event will occur only on Sunday, for example, one has less chance of experiencing it as soon as all requirements are met as most of the Weekly Bazaars occur on Saturday or Sunday. With rainy weekends and Bazaars, my male Character had no opportunity to experience Sherry's 1st Heart Event until fairly late in Spring. It was so late in fact, that she had attained Purple Heart level by the time he was able to experience her 1st Heart Event and her 2nd Heart Event occurred the very next day.
I do believe now that Rival Heart Events have Heart Level 'ceilings' as in other Harvest Moon games. It appears that, once the Eligible Girl/Bachelor reaches Purple Heart Level, you no longer will be able to experience the 1st Rival Heart Event. If any one can refute this, I would be happy to hear it, but in the files where my Character raised Heart Levels too quickly, he/she missed the 1st Rival Heart Event for one or more couples. Rivals never marry, but most players like to experience as many Events as possible. I therefore would advise players not to raise Heart Levels too quickly in Grand Bazaar. The Spring Festivals such as Flower Festival and Spring Harmony Day offer extra opportunities to boost Heart Levels. It may be better on ordinary days simply to 'meet and greet' all Eligible Girls/Bachelors than to ply them with too many Gifts until you have triggered the 1st Rival Heart Events for all couples.
As far as marriage requirements are concerned, there is an added requirement for each Eligible Girl and Bachelor to raise the Heart Levels of specific Villagers before any proposal of marriage will be accepted.
These involve the Eligible Girl or Bachelor's Family or another individual who is treated like a family member and are as follows:
Ivan: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Dirk for a successful proposal
Dirk: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Ivan for a successful proposal
Lloyd: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Felix and Sherry for a successful proposal
Sherry: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Felix and Lloyd for a successful proposal
Antoinette: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Claude for a successful proposal
Daisy: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Stuart and Ethel for a successful proposal

The Gift of an item that an Individual detests will result in a subtraction of Affection or Friendship Points but it will be a smaller point loss than that which results from an incorrect Response during any Heart Event. Gifts that a Character likes will result in an increase in Affection Points and a Most Favourite has the greatest value of all. The ordinary value of a Most Favourite Gift when given as a Birthday Gift is multiplied.

Evidently you cannot make a successful proposal in the first year, even if you have met all Requirements for marriage. The earliest that you can marry is the 12th of Spring in the second year. Furthermore, no marriages will occur during the Winter Season in any year. (Unconfirmed in my own games, although more than one player has been unable to marry in Winter and in the first year.)

If you choose the 'incorrect' Response in the course of the Event, the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor will decrease. Heart Colour may or may not change depending on the actual point total at the time the Event is triggered. In other words, if the Eligible Girl or Bachelor only reached Purple Heart Level on the previous day, giving the incorrect Response in the course of the Purple Heart Event will result in a colour change back to Black/Grey. If, however, the Eligible Girl or Bachelor almost has reached Blue Heart Level when the Event is triggered, the Heart Colour will remain Purple, even with the Affection Point loss.
The Gift of an item that an Individual detests will result in a subtraction of Affection or Friendship Points but it will be a smaller point loss than that which results from an incorrect Response during any Heart Event. Gifts that a Character likes will result in an increase in Affection Points and a Most Favourite has the greatest value of all. The ordinary value of a Most Favourite Gift when given as a Birthday Gift is multiplied.
The purchase of the traditional Harvest Moon 'Big Bed' is a requirement for Marriage. After marriage, you can have a Child although the Child never will become an adult.
Information received from a player, as yet not confirmed in my games:
Evidently you cannot make a successful proposal in the first year, even if you have met all Requirements for marriage. The earliest that you can marry is the 12th of Spring in the second year. Furthermore, no marriages will occur during the Winter Season in any year. (Unconfirmed in my own games, although more than one player has been unable to marry in Winter and in the first year.)
