Introduction

Harvest Moon Grand Bazaar for the DS system is a traditional Harvest Moon game in that your Character arrives at a village as an aspiring Farmer. You can play either as a Boy or as a Girl and the main distinction here will be in terms of Courtship and Marriage. Heart Events will differ obviously according to your Character's gender but Rival Heart Events will be the same in both games.

The village in this game is Zephyr, aptly named as its power is fueled by the wind. Windmills are central to Zephyr Village and as your Character makes progress in the game, more Windmills will be accessible to him/her. Each Windmill has its own Recipes. When you are given access to a new Windmill, you will be able to see most of the Recipes that can be prepared there. In some cases, there are a few Recipes that need to be unlocked before the list will be complete.

As in any Harvest Moon game, social interactions and community participation is a key to your success. Remembering Birthdays with a Gift is important in winning friends and pursuing the courtship of any Eligible Girl or Bachelor.

Your success in monetary terms is based primarily on your sales at the weekly Bazaar rather than shipping totals. You cannot ship items per se in Grand Bazaar. Instead, you need to store items during the week in order to be able to sell them at your Stall at the village Bazaar.

The weekly Bazaar is held by default on Saturday but if any Festival or Birthday is set to occur on Saturday, the Bazaar will be held on Sunday instead. The Bazaar Grounds are located in the northeast section of the village. It begins at 10.00 a.m. and ends at 7.00 p.m. During the hours of business, you can open and shut your Stall as you wish in order to be able to explore and shop at other Stalls. You often can find items that are not sold at the local shops at the Stalls at the Bazaar. For example, in the first Spring, Raul will sell Potato and Cabbage Seeds at his Bazaar Stall. Wilbur will perform expansions of your Field or Storage. Enrique sells Animals and Lloyd sells Ores. An unnamed Character has a Gift-Wrapping Stall where she will wrap any item for you for 200G. Note that the Cooked Dishes sold at Joan's Stall at the Bazaar as well as those on the Menu at her Cafe are chosen randomly. Any Cooked Dish you purchase will be given to you as an actual item, so you can sell it, consume it or give it to some one as a Gift. Whenever you purchase a Cooked Dish, Joan will 'teach' you the Recipe. Buying Cooked Dishes therefore is one method of adding to your Cookbook. Cooked Dishes often make more desirable Gifts for many Characters than raw ingredients or foraged items, although many Characters do love Flowers.

As previously indicated, Ranch Animals are sold at the Weekly Bazaar and are chosen randomly by the game, although Adult Animals appear once you have purchased a 'young' Animal of the same type. Cooked Dishes at Joan's Cafe and Stall are chosen randomly by the game as well.

Each week, you will be given a Bazaar sales goal by Mayor Felix. Do not expect to meet the first goal of 15,000G - 20,000G immediately!

Note that, with respect to later sales goals, you may have to reach them more than once before the Mayor will announce a new Goal.

The individuals who had the best Stalls will receive awards on the day after the Bazaar. These are announced at the square at noon. 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place awards are given for the highest sales. One other award that is announced is for the individual who had the 'happiest customers'. The reward for 1st Place is Small Milk. 2nd Place Reward is an Egg.

It is not only through selling the correct number of items to a buyer that you achieve recognition but in dealing with customers socially. Often a customer will come to your Stall simply to talk. The individual may ask questions or seek your aid in some minor way. You usually will be given a choice of three responses. Your choice will determine how happy you made your customers. Please see the Bazaar Dialogues section in my Walkthrough/General Guide for the text of these Dialogues as well as correct responses and results.

Where Events that unlock new options are concerned, the default date is given, but in many cases, as with the Windmill Events, good weather is a requirement. If it rains on the default date, the Event will occur in good weather, within a couple of days of the default day.

The Event that introduces Amir is an Event that requires good weather, so if you have a series of snowy days in the beginning of Winter in the first Year, both the Snowboard Event and Introduction to Amir Events will be delayed. There is a set hierarchy to Events in Grand Bazaar similar to that in Hero of Leaf Valley. If there is no fine weather for the first three days in Winter, the Introduction to Amir will preempt the Snowboard Event and occur on the 4th.

Festivals

There are both community Festivals and Romantic Festivals in Grand Bazaar. Romantic Festivals tend to be the traditional Harvest Moon Festivals, including Spring and Winter Harmony Day Festivals and the Starry Night Festival.

In some Harvest Moon or Rune Factory games, the Harmony Day Festivals, sometimes known as the Thanksgiving Festivals, can be occasions for gift-giving to ALL members of the opposite gender and therefore can be considered community Festivals as well as Romantic Festivals. This is not the case in Grand Bazaar. Only members of the opposite gender will recognise a specific Gift as a Harmony Day Gift on the appointed date. If you give the Gift to a Character who is not Eligible for Marriage, he/she will make the same Response to that Item as on any other Day. Moreover, other Characters will not speak of the Harmony Day Festival at all.

The only other Character who will recognise the date, albeit not with dialogue, is Joan, who will sell Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Cake on both the Spring Harmony Festival and Winter Harmony Festival. Furthermore, it is important to realise that tese are the ONLY Items that are recognised as Harmony Day Gifts in Grand Bazaar. You cannot give Chocolate or regular Cookies/Cake to an Eligible Girl/Bachelor and expect these Gifts to be recognised as Harmony Day Gifts as you can in other Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games.

It is interesting to note that other Characters can give ordinary Cookies/Cake in their Visits on the Spring or Winter Harmony Day Festival! Ordinary Cookies represent a low Heart Level, however, and as Heart Levels increase, will be replaced with Chocolate Cookies or Chocolate Cake.

Community Festivals

In many Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games, community Festivals will have a number of different venues. In Grand Bazaar, all Community Festivals as well as all Announcement Events occur at the Town Square.

There are two different varieties of Community Festival in Grand Bazaar. The first is a Community Feast of some kind where the entire Community will enjoy a special Dish. The Tea Party and Wine Festivals are examples of this. For these Festivals, your Character is expected to bring the special Dish/Drink, but in the first Year, Felix will deliver this to your farmhouse at 6.00 a.m. a few days prior to the Festival.

If you are clever, you can substitute a different Item for the actual Festival. For the Tea Party, instead of using the Spring Tea Leaves he gives to you, you could use Straight Tea to brew some Tea in your Kitchen as your contribution. For the Wine Festival in the first Year, you could make Chicha with Potato and Yogurt or Tomato Wine using the Red Wine with a Tomato. The only problem with the Wine substitution is that fermentation in these cases is a slow process, even if you speed the Windmill by blowing into the Microphone. You should make the substitution drink before Felix delivers the Red Wine in order to have it ready in time for the Wine Festival.

Although the Community Feast Festivals are not Contests, you will receive a reward in the form of a special Item when you participate in the Event. The default Item for the Tea Party is Apple Pie, but if you contribute a different sort of Tea, you will receive a different Item at the end of the Festival.

The second type of community Festival is a Contest. There are Animal Contests of various sorts as well as the two-part Cooking Contest. There is a Snowboard Contest in Winter.
