Introduction

In Grand Bazaar, you have more than one Cookbook or Recipes List. There is the list in your Kitchen, divided into Categories of Salad, Soup, Appetisers, Maiin Courses/Entrees, Dessert and Drinks/Others. Each Windmill has its own Recipe List as well.

Recipes from the Zephyr Cafe

The Zephyr Cafe is the place where Cooked Dishes can be purchased in Grand Bazaar. The proprietor Joan has a Stall at the Weekly Bazaar as well where she offers Cooked Dishes.

Her hours of operation at the Cafe are:

Zephyr Cafe
Open 10.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m.
Closed Thursday and Bazaar Days

At the Zephyr Cafe in the first couple of weeks in Spring, you probably will find only two Dishes on the Menu. These are chosen randomly. By purchasing any Cooked Dish for the first time, you will 'learn' the Recipe from Joan and find it in your Cookbook both in your Kitchen and in the Assets Menu in your Bookshelf. The Cooked Dishes found at Joan's Stall at the Bazaar are chosen randomly as well, but may be different from those you have found at the Cafe. It always is a good idea to look at her Menu on a daily basis, both at the Cafe and at the weekly Bazaar.

Early Dishes that appear randomly on Joan's Menu both at the Cafe and the Bazaar include: Rice Ball, Cabbage Rolls, Fish Paste, Fried Rice Ball, Yakisoba, Pancake, Donut, Pudding, Straight Tea, Milk Tea, Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Cake. You will not be able to make many of these Dishes in your Kitchen in the first Spring.

The prices of Cooked Dishes when sold by Joan is included in the Kitchen Recipe Section of this Guide.

Note that all Joan's Dishes tend to be only 1/2 Star in quality, while Dishes made in your Kitchen usually will have far higher rank.

Spring Harmony Day occurs on 14 Spring in Grand Bazaar and Chocolates are not recognised as a Spring Harmony Gift by any Eligible Girls. Joan usually sells both Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Cake on that day, however, so if you wish to give Spring Harmony Day Gifts to all the Girls in the first Spring, save a little money and buy four portions of Chocolate Cookies from Joan.

As previously indicated, whenever you purchase a Cooked Dish from Joan, she will teach you the Recipe for the Dish and it will be added automatically to your Cookbook. The problem here is that Recipes seldom include descriptions of the Utensils required to make them. Although many Recipes require no special Utensils, others do. If you wonder why you cannot make Straight Tea from the Straight Tea tin brought up from the River, it is because all Teas must be made in a Pot. Herb Salad needs to be made in a Pot as well. A Boiled Egg, on the other hand, can be made without any special Utensils. The Utensils required to prepare any Dish are included in the Kitchen Recipes section of this Guide as well as my special Grand Bazaar Cookbook Recipes Guide.

Another method of gaining new Recipes is by purchasing a Cooked Dish from another Player's Stall in Multiplayer Mode. When you buy the Dish, you will be taught the Recipe.

Other Food from the Bazaar

The Bazaar has other Stalls apart from Joan's Stall where food items can be purchased. Felix always sells Chocolate, but he will sell Truffles and Rice Candy at certain times in the year.

When the Bazaar is expanded for the second time, Claire will open her own Stall there, where she will sell Cooked Dishes made with Soybeans and Soybean Products as well as Dishes made with Rice Candy.

Cooked Dishes

Cooked Dishes as in most Harvest Moon games, have higher values than raw items. The first Cooked Dishes that you can make without any trouble should be Turnips and Steamed Mushrooms.

Failed Dish: 1G

Steamed Mushrooms (1 1/2 Stars): 315G

When you buy your first Chick and it becomes an adult, you can make a Boiled Egg:

Boiled Egg (2 Stars): 80G

If you wish to complete your own Cookbook as quickly as possible, it is a good idea to purchase Cooked Dishes from Joan whenever it is one for which you cannot obtain the ingredients yet. Until Rice (uncooked) appears at Chen's Stall at the Bazaar, you will be unable to make any Dishes that require Rice. Until you are able to obtain Flour, you will be unable to cook any Dishes that require Flour or Bread....

Another strategy for completing a Cookbook as early as possible is to ask your Friends to share their Cooked Dishes in Multiplayer Mode. Any Cooked Dish purchased at a Neighbourhood Stall is given with its Recipe.

Incidentally, as with any of the Skill or Experience Levels that are linked to a Title in Grand Bazaar, it is not the number of Dishes that you make in your Kitchen, but the number of NEW Dishes that you make that ultimately will increase your Experience/Skill Levels and grant you new Titles as a new Dish gives you far more points than one you have cooked previously..

Items that you buy at the Cafe can be resold for a lesser price than you paid originally. The price will differ if you make the item in your own Kitchen only if the Quality is higher. Cooked Dishes purchased from Joan tend to be 1 Star Quality, where Cooked Dishes from your own Kitchen should be higher.

You will find the values of Items made in your Kitchen as well as their prices when sold by Joan in the Kitchen Recipes section of this Guide.

Kitchen Recipes

Your Kitchen will be available at the very start of the game. Recipes are sorted into six different Categories and can be obtained through 'trial and error' or by purchasing a Cooked Dish from Joan at the Zephyr Cafe or at her Stall at the weekly Bazaar. Two of the earliest Dishes that you can make are Turnip Salad and Steamed Mushrooms.

Another method of gaining new Recipes is by purchasing a Cooked Dish from another Player's Stall in Multiplayer Mode. When you buy the Dish, you will be taught the Recipe.

Ingredients are given as pictures but if you use the Touchsceen to tap the icon with two arrows that is to the left of the X at the bottom of the Recipe List, you will be taken to a Touchscreen Recipe where you can tap on the ingredient picture to see a written description.

Very early Recipes that you should be able to make include:

Turnip Salad:
Ingredients: Turnip

Steamed Mushrooms:
Ingredients: Shitake

When you have an adult Chicken, which can be as early as the second week in Spring, she will lay one egg per day if healthy. You then can make the following:

Boiled Egg:
Ingredients: Egg

Egg Custard:
Ingredients: Egg + Shitake

An Egg Custard that has 2 1/2 Stars sells for 495G to Raul and double that at your Bazaar Stall. Mushrooms tend to appear most often during or after rain but can be stored.

Note that although most Recipes require no additional Utensils, there are Cooked Dishes that cannot be made successfully unless you have a special Utensil such as a Pot or Frying Pan or Seasonings.

In Grand Bazaar, Recipes given by Joan do not display anything but the ingredients and the description. If any Utensil is needed to prepare the Dish successfully, the Recipe often will not make this clear. In cases where NO Utensil is needed, moreover, the description sometimes mentions Utensils. For example:

Herb Salad:
Ingredients: Mint + Chamomile + Lavender
A mixed herb salad. Has a nice fragrance.

In fact, although this is a Salad, you will need a Pot in order to make it successfully.

Fried Egg, on the other hand, requires no special Utensil, although:

Fried Egg:
Ingredients: Egg + Oil
A simple and easy dish. Just fry it up in a pan.

As you can see, the description declares that you need to 'fry it up in a pan' but you can make it without a Frying Pan.

The Pot and Frying Pan will be sold at the Cookware Stall when the Bazaar is expanded for the first time. Each will cost 10,000G. When you purchase the Pot, Seasonings should be added to the Menu for 10,000G the next week. Where any Cooking Utensil is required, that information has been included in the Recipe wherever possible. If you have a Recipe for a Cooked Dish, but it requires Cookware that you do not have, you will see a prompt to that effect at the top of your screen when you access the Recipe.

An interesting fact about Cooking in Grand Bazaar is that ingredients that are going bad often can be used to create a Cooked Dish and when the Dish is completed, it will be 'Super Fresh'. This is true both of items made in the Kitchen and at any of the Windmills. You therefore should cook any items that are losing their Freshness if possible rather than selling them at a reduced price. Even a 'Rotten' Item can be used in cooking and will regain some quality as a Cooked Dish.

For example, a Rotten Milk when cooked will become Hot Milk that is 'getting bad' but not rotten.

There are some Fish that cannot be used in the Kitchen, whether you catch them in your own village or in another Player's village. Among these are the Ayumadoki, the Moray Eel and the Bluegill. Where Fish Dishes are concerned, most of the Recipes will specify a particular variety of Fish, but you usually will be able to substitute other varieties. As time permits, I will add optional ingredients and substitutions to the Recipes List.

Cooking Festival

You will experience two Cooking Festivals in the middle of the first Autumn. By this time, your Character should have all Cookware and a decent array of Ingredients and Recipes. The Festival occurs in two consecutive days. The Theme on the first day is Entrees and the Theme on the second is Desserts.

One of the purposes of any Cooking Festival in Harvest Moon is to introduce new Dishes to players. In the first year, you are likely to see Dishes on the Table that you have not encountered at Joan's Cafe or Stall.

As with most Festivals in Grand Bazaar, the Cooking Festivals are held at noon in the Town Square. Felix presides but then announces a visiting expert judge in the person of Pierre from Sunny Island/Sunshine Islands!

It is not difficult to win 1st Prize in the Cooking Festival in Grand Bazaar. A player can cheat a little by purchasing a Cooked Dish in Multiplayer Mode but you will not win if you enter a Dish purchased from the Cafe as they are of poor quality at 1/2 Stars.

For the Entree, a simple Fish Stew of 3 1/2 Stars Quality made with a Silver Goby in a Pot won 1st Prize. The prize is a Truffle, given by Pierre.

The theme for the second Day in the Cooking Festival is Desserts in the first year. Freshness possibly is as critical in determining the quality of your Dish as the Rank or Stars that it has. With a 4 Star Pudding that was only 'fairly fresh', Freyja did not win 1st Prize, but with a 4 Star Pumpkin Pudding that was 'Super Fresh', she did. The prize if you win in both Categories is a Pink Diamond. If you win only the Dessert Contest, the prize will be a tin of Blueberry Tea.

Optional Ingredients

Although Recipes may be very specific where Ingredients are concerned, especially for Fish Dishes, substitutions as well as additions may be possible.

For example, the ingredient for Sashimi is Tuna, but you will find that Sculpin can be substituted in its place. For Fish Stew, the ingredient is Silver Goby but Dark Sleepr can be used as well.

For Mushroom Dishes, often Shimeji can be substituted for or added to Shitake to create the Dish. When the ingredient is an addition rather than a substitution, the result, if successful, will be an improved Dish.

When substitutions can be made, you cannot use the existing Recipe to cook the Dish. Choose the option to cook without the Recipe, then place the ingredients manually in the Ingredients Slots. Recipes are very specific where any Ingredient is concerned.

For example, if the Recipe recorded for Fish Stew contains Silver Goby as an Ingredient and you wish to make it using a Mackerel instead, you cannot use the existing Recipe as it will search for a Silver Goby in vain. Instead, place the Mackerel in the Ingredient Slot and choose the option to Start preparing the Dish. It will make Fish Stew successfully, tell you that the new Dish is almost the same as the old one and ask you if you wish to rewrite the Recipe. If you choose to rewrite it, the Recipe will specify Mackerel instead of Silver Goby.

Similarly, if you make Egg Custard with Egg, Shitake and Shimeji and record that Recipe, then try to make another Egg Custard with only Egg and Shitake, you will be told you do not have sufficient ingredients. You need to choose the option to 'Cook without Recipe' to make an Egg Custard with only one type of Mushroom if your improved recorded Recipe has two.

Ingredients from the Bazaar

Ingredients for Cooked Dishes can consist of Items found by foraging, Crops grown on your Farm, Ranch Products obtained from your Animals, ingredients such as Rice or Oil purchased from Chen after the Bazaar's 1st Expansion or Cooked Dishes. Your first source of Cooked Dishes will be Joan, who sells them at her Cafe and at the Weekly Bazaar even before it is expanded.

With the Bazaar's 2nd Expansion, Claire will open her own Stall at the Bazaar, where she will sell Cooked Dishes that are made with Soybeans and Rice Candy, allowing you to cook new Dishes.

If you wish to complete your Cookbook as early as possible in the game, you should be aware always of the appearance of new Dishes at Joan's Cafe or the Bazaar Stalls where Cooked Dishes are sold. Although most Dishes use only raw ingredients, there are a number that use a Cooked Dish. Cooked Dishes that are required ingredients in more than one Recipe include Bread and Cake.

Incidentally, although Claire sells Cooked Dishes made with Rice Candy as well as Soybean Products, it is Felix who offers Rice Candy at his Stall near the end of the first Winter. Sad to say, Rice Candy is not given away at the New Year's Eve Festival in the Square. In fact, you will not be given any food items to take home, although you will be treated to a feast in situ after 8.00 p.m.

Felix will begin to sell Wheat Seeds at his Stall at the Bazaar in Spring of the second Year. Wheat takes 50 Days to mature and can be grown only from Spring through the end of Autumn, so you should buy as many Seeds as possible at the first Bazaar in Spring. Wheat after it is harvested can be processed into Flour at the 3rd Windmill.

Kitchen Recipe Cookbook

In Grand Bazaar, the Recipe in your Cookbook in the Kitchen is not Utensil-specific. You simply stand in front of the Kitchen counter to cook, using any or none of the Cookware that you have. The only indication of the need for Cookware will be displayed if you do NOT have the necessary Utensil. You then will see a prompt at the top of the screen to the effect that you are lacking the necessary Cookware, without specifying which Utensil is needed.

Cost refers to the cost you pay for the Dish with 1/2 Star Quality if you purchase the Cooked Dish at the Zephyr Cafe or Joan's Bazaar Stall. Value is the price that any merchant will pay for your Cooked Dish. I therefore have specified the actual Quality of the Dish sold for that price as Dishes made in your Kitchen usually will have a better Quality than those sold by Joan.

Windmills in Grand Bazaar

1st Windmill Tutorial

On Tuesday, 24 Spring at 6.00 a.m., you should receive a visit from Isaac. This Event will unlock the first Windmill that is located on your own Farm. Isaac will give you a little tutorial about Windmills in general and the Windmill on your farm specifically.

Each of the Windmills has a slightly different function in terms of the Items it can create. The 1st Windmill deals with fermentation and therefore is the one where all Pickles, alcoholic beverages and Yogurts are created, among other things. Butter and Cheese are made at this Windmill as well.

Isaac: Windmills are very useful, and can ghelp you alot. They use the power of the wind to make things. It's quite convenient, actually! Please, follow me.

He takes me inside the Windmill below my field.

Isaac: Are you surprised? It's great, isn't it? I said earlier that windmills can make many different things. This windmill will ferment whatever you decide to use. For instance, milk becomes cheese, and eggs become mayonnaise. You can make many things from simple ingredients.

Now, let's go through how to use the windmill. First, place the item you wish to ferment here. After that, you'll be able to choose what you want to make. The necessary ingredients are chosen for you, so just decide how many you want. You can make up to six types of items at once.

That metre tells you what you're making right now. It also tells you how much time is left until the item will be complete. The time needed will depend on wind strength. Stronger winds mean shorter times! When this light starts to blink, your item is ready. And then you just take your completed item out of here!

And that's the basics of how you use a windmill! Oh, do you happen to have any Wonderfuls, Freya?

Me: ?

Isaac: Wonderfuls can make the windmill more powerful! There are 6 kinds, each with their own unique effects! If you find one, just put it in here!

And that's how you use a Windmill!... Please use the wiindmill with care. Ah yes... Here's a helpful tip if you want to shorten the waiting time... Stand near the blades of the windmill, then blow into the microphone. Something very interesting should occur...

Me: ?

Isaac: Heh heh heh... Give it a try! There are two other windmills here in town, so I'll fix them up too. I'll come tell you when you can use them. Well, I''ll be going now. Enjoy using the windmill!

When the Event ends, explore the Windmill Menu and you will find a list of Recipes. Choose:

Use the Windmill?

You then will have access to the Recipe List.

Incidentally, blowing on the microphone can decrease the time for any Item significantly. Weather will affect the Wind as well. Times given here are the 'default' times, which translates to the longest possible time it can take to complete the Recipe.

1st Windmill Recipe List

Ingredients for Recipes are displayed in the Menu solely in picture form, but this is one situation where you can use the Touchscreen. Change the view to a Touchscreen view by tapping on the little double arrows to the left of the X, then tap on the icon of the ingredient to see a written description of it.

Although you can make Wine and Tea at this Windmill, they will not be ready for consumption afterwards. Wine as well as Beer and Champagne must be poured into a Glass in your Kitchen using the proper Recipe and Tea must be brewed.

2nd Windmill: Forging and Manufacturing

On 16 or 17 Summer, you should receive another Visit from Isaac at 6.00 a.m. to unlock the second Windmill. This is the Windmill south of the Hotel and west of Angelo's House. Isaac will describe it as the 'last Windmill' but it actually is the second of three that will be unlocked in the first year.

It is this Windmill that allows you to forge more powerful tools and create Accessories.

As Isaac will explain:

Isaac: This windmill lets you manufacture various items. For example, ore becomes accessories, and tools can become more powerful. With the right ingredients, you can make all kinds of items! You use it the same way you use the other windmills.

You should be able to upgrade some of your Tools as soon as the Windmill is unlocked if you have stored the necessary Ores for the upgrades. In particular, the first Fishing Rod upgrade is easy to perform as it requires only one piece of Lumber and a piece of Copper. It does take 48 hours so you need to resign yourself to the loss of this Tool for three days unless you are willing to expend a large amount of energy blowing on the microphone to speed the Windmill. Furthermore, Tool Upgrades in Grand Bazaar resemble those in Rune Factory more than traditional Harvest Moon games, as you will need to upgrade the Tool a number of times to improve its Rank or Quality significantly. Each upgrade only improves Rank by half a Star. Note that you never will be able to create a NEW Tool from an existing Tool.

It is only in the second Year that the Medium Fishing Rod will appear at Felix's Stall at the Bazaar and only in the fourth Year that the Long Fishing Rod will appear.

Even with the original, unimproved Short Fishing Rod, you will be able to catch rather decent Fish, however, especially in bad weather. Severe storms such as Hurricanes and Snowstorms tend to bring larger, ocean fish into the River at the Hotel Screen. Some may prove too powerful for your basic Fishing Rod but you may be surprised nonetheless as to what you can catch without any upgrades.

Only the Hoe, Watering Can and Fishing Rod can be upgraded in Grand Bazaar.

The 3rd Windmill

Although Isaac will tell you that the 2nd Windmill is the 'last' Windmill, players will know at once that this cannot be true, as there is another Windmill near the Waterfall.

On 3 Autumn, Isaac will appear at your Farmhouse to announce that he has unlocked the third Windmill.

Isaac: This Windmill is used for grinding items. For example, crops will make seeds and wheat will make flour. With the right ingredients, you can make all kinds of items!

As you can see, the third Windmill takes the place of the Seedmaker as well as the Mills in other Harvest Moon games.
